MoMI Visit

The tour guide started off by showed us two popular optical toys during the 19th century, the Thaumatrope and the Zoetrope. I remembered professors had taught us in one of the lectures and it was totally different when I saw how it really works in real life. The tour guide first demonstrated the Thaumatrope it was a picture of the cage and the bird and I saw how the two pictures blend into one when he released the strings. Then he also demonstrated the Zoetrope when he spun the cylinder I saw the figure started running through the cuts in the sides. I like how he started off with the pre-film animation devices.  Then he brought us to introduced different types of cameras that have caught the moving image for generations including the very first camera that was 110 years old. He also shows us one of the first cameras that produces color and he explained how color was produced. He said the three separate strips stored color information that went into the lens. Then he showed...

Relationships Between Shots

For this assignment, I decided to analyze the editing of a scene from a Taiwanese film, Secret (2007). The director of this film is Jay Chou.  The scene depicted the four hands piano duet of the main actor and actress using continuity editing protocols. It begins with a high angle close up shot of the main actor. He is playing the piano with one hand, he is in focus and the background, which is the piano, is out of focus. Then the scene changes and shows the actress and the actor in the same frame in a medium shot. It’s another angle of the first shot. Then the camera moves towards the actor as the actress speaks. After the actress finishes her line she becomes out of focus and only the actor is in focus. As the actor speaks to the actress the camera moves over and she goes towards the actor and she is in focus again. Then the scene shows the actress sits next to the actor and the actor turns around facing the piano they are at the right side of the frame the actress is more i...

New York City's Voice

I decided to do my Soundwalk assignment at early evening on a Tuesday in Chinatown, Manhattan . In Chinatown, there were people talking in different Chinese dialects mostly in Mandarin, Yue, which is popularly known as the Cantonese or Min, where I was from the Fujian province. Chinatown is a pretty crowd area and with narrow streets. People would run into others very easily and I noticed certain people would apologize while others ignored and walk away. There are also a lot of intercity buses around the area where I walked. At early evening there were a lot of buses are departing and the traffic sounds are all around. And there’s a moment when one bus was about to leave I can hear the sound of the starting of the bus’ engine and a guy runs towards the bus with his luggage and shout, “WAIT FOR ME!” And the conductor stops the bus driver by knocking on the door. The door slowly opened with a hissing sound and the guy hop on the bus and the door slowly closed with another hissing ...

Artist Statement

Hello, there~ my name is Jialing, a very common name in Chinese. I came from a small village located on the southeast coast of mainland China. “Look! Airplanes!” someone would shout and all the children would stop whatever he or she was doing to look up at the sky, and stare at the airplane as it made a really loud noise and left white trail lines behind. My mom was talking excitedly to our relatives as they were helping us move the heavy luggage. My mom rented a 20-seat bus to get us to the airport. She also bought a ton of firecrackers too. It was a tradition in my village to send off whoever was leaving the country with a lot of love and good luck. The smoke from the fireworks submerged the whole area where I used to live for ten years. The plane landed in New York City, a city that never sleeps, where lights were turned on at all times. I wish I could have record all of these, the big moments of my life. I grew up in different environment, grew up with different people,...
